The Olympians - Episode 6: Hera

Updated: Jun 8, 2019

Hera (roman form: Juno) was a child of the Titans Kronos and Rhea. She is the goddess of marriage, also described as Queen of Heaven and Queen of the Olympians. Hera's brothers were Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus, while her sisters were Demeter and Hestia. Her children were Eilithyia, the goddess of childbirth, Ares, the Olympian god of war, Hebe, the goddess of youth and Hephaestus, the Olympian god of Metallurgy. According to some beliefs, Hephaestus was born without the intervention of Zeus.

According to some beliefs, the name "Hera" derives from the ancient Greek word "Air", meaning "Wind", since Hera was also a deity the wind and the weather. Hera might have been an Olympian goddess, but her place on Mount Olympus was not always assured. For instance, Zeus once suspended Hera from Mount Olympus for sending a storm against the hero Heracles while he was on his way home after capturing Troy.

Roman poet Ovid once said that the month June has been named after Juno, the roman name of Hera, because the goddess was worshipped during that month (I personally don't agree, though). Since Hera was a goddess of marriage, many couples considered June as their most favourable time to marry.

Hera was a mature woman with pierced lobes. She always took care of her appearance, dressing elegantly and decently. Hera's symbol were the diadem, the scepter and the pomegranate, a symbol of fertility. Her flower was the lily and her sacred animals were the peacock and the cow.
