The Olympians - Episode 8: Artemis

Updated: Jun 10, 2019

Sure enough, I am writing about another goddess called Artemis. She is the goddess of hunt, nature and birth. She is also described in Greek mythology as "Goddess of the night", "Lady of the Beast", "Woodland Goddess" and "Phoebe," which translates as the bright one. Artemis had a twin brother, Apollo, the god of the Sun, whereas Artemis' cult was connected to the Moon. Artemis was born before Apollo and helped her mother give birth to her little brother (even though Apollo calls Artemis "his little sister").

As a child, Artemis had asked from her father Zeus to remain an eternal virgin and therefore became one of the three Virgin Goddesses in Greek mythology. Artemis was obsessed over nature. Usually accompanied by Nymphs and Oceanids, she loved to hunt with arrows dipped in poison (yep, very furious, so you wouldn't want her against you). Oddly enough, Artemis was both a killer of wild animals and their protector.

Artemis was usually armed with bow and arrows and was wearing a knee-high chiton (a sort of tunic). The symbols of Artemis were the bow and the pike. Her tree was the cedar and her sacred animals were the snake, the bear and the deer. The next episode will be about a god named Hermes, and it will obviously be written by my friend Charles. That is all for Artemis, see you in future episodes!
