The Olympians - Episode 9: Hermes

Hermes, or Mercury in Roman form, is the god of thievery, travel, and many more. He is also the messenger of the gods. By the way, this is Charles again, and my website (which is also created by wix.com) is called viomagma.com. I got the domain from godaddy.com, a place to get both websites and domains. Only several dollars each year! Now, done with the advertising. Now, let's get started.

Hermes is the child of Zeus and Maia, daughter of the titan Atlas (who will be introduced in the Titans section that James just made). He was born in a cave because Maia doesn't want any other god of goddess, especially Hera to notice Hermes. But unfortunately, Hermes just wanted to go out and have an adventure. So, cunning little Hermes waited her mother to get asleep, and went out to see what was going on out there. Eventually, he somehow arrived at the resting place of Apollo's herd of sheep. Hermes used his plans to make the herd go away so that Apollo will get angry. It was full of tricks. When Apollo came back in the morning, he found out and arrived at Hermes' cave. Maia was angry but Apollo was angrier. He chased Hermes until Hermes ran up Olympus. Apollo can't even catch him because Hermes was too fast.

When Apollo got up Olympus, Zeus was already examining his new son. Hera was supposed to be raged, but she thinks Hermes is very cute so it decreased her temper. In order to fix his mistake, Hermes made Apollo the first instrument, the harp (that is how Apollo turned into the god of music). In return, Apollo gave him the Caduceus. Zeus also gave him his winged helmet and winged shoes. In his later immortal life, he added two snakes to his staff and froze them into the same substance as the Caduceus was made from.

He is also the father of Pan, god of the wild and nature. His mother is Dryope, a wood nymph, although there are many other different myths that said his mother is another person. He is also the father of Hermaphrodite, which he had with Aphrodite, goddess of love. Asklepios's father is Hermes too. He is the god of medicine. Another of his offsprings is a very unfamiliar god named Priapus.

Now that you know about Hermes, what do you think he is? I think he is sometimes helpful and sometimes really really cunning. In many other myths, he tricked tons of people into trouble. He is my second favorite god in greek mythology. He is like Loki in Norse mythology, but Loki was WAY eviler. Next episode shall be about Ares, god of war. He is my least favorite god, but he still belongs in those blogs. James will be posting it today. Good luck traveling! (??? I'm not traveling? Well, walking counts as traveling!)
